Old city of Nablus

Sites for Visiting inside the Old City

It is possible to visit all the sites and buildings inside the old city and enjoy their viewing from the main street without restriction unless it is mentioned in e.g., some of the more important sites related to the tourist walks which have been inscribed on the special map of the old city.

The traditional market in Nablus is considered one of the most beautiful examples of markets in traditional Arab towns as it has its oriental pattern. The commercial activity in Nablus town used to extend farther than the local market, especially during the eighteenth & nineteenth centuries. The location of the town assisted in extending the commercial roads for caravans coming from the east to the west, and those heading from the south to the north. As a result, its public life became that of a regional entrepot for the trade routes reaching out to Egypt, Syria, Hijaz, Mount of Lebanon and Europe via Jaffa seaport to Marseille in France. Exports to these locations included the famous Nabulsi soap, and other specialities of the eastern market. Today however only the two old textile markets survive. It is worth noting that most of the stores close their doors on Friday and the two first days of the Al-Fitr & Al-Adha feasts,
