The old city of Nablus has been classified as a unique style of traditional architecture. It reflects a complex, organic social structure which is connected to the fabric of relations between the people living there. The design of the urban fabric of the old city is compatible with the climate and geography of the place. This harmony is manifested in the speciality of the buildings, in their size and the overlapping sections, illustrating professional construction that took into account the particularities of the local, Islamic traditions and social customs.
This satisfies an important part of the human needs of the residents, simply because it reflects the proprieties of the Islamic tradition and social custom in general.
The overlapping architectural structures form defined neighborhoods and ahwāsh. The interpenetrated blocks in it overlook the main markets and public spaces which hide the privileged private space of the inhabitants, but they hint at the beauty within it through a glimpse of green gardens and climbing plants on the external walls, fleeing their confines so as to spread their perfume and ascend aloft, searching for light as if they are trying to hug the sun light.
Behind the windows, the wooden shutters are joined to the windows or a certain wooden balcony “mashrabiyyah”, whose windows are made of wood that is fixed with rhombus shapes that shelter the inside of the house from the heat of the sun, but they let fresh air penetrate and light to pass through.
