The House of ‘Ashūr

This house was built by Hāj 'Afīf 'Ashūr. He had been a merchant and soap factory owner. The house is at al–Khadr street in the western end of the old city. It consists of two storeys, a ground floor with a courtyard surrounded by an Iwān and several rooms. The upper storey of the house contains living quarters.

The most significant feature of the house is the open yard at the entrance area on ground level. There is a water fountain that is made of ornamented marble in the middle of the entrance yard, surrounded by white marble tiles covering the floor.

It is considered a beautiful example of the Damascene home in form and ornamentation; especially the black and white patterned tiles on the floors.
