The House of Sūfān

The house of Sūfān lies in the middle of the old city, opposite the 'Ayn al-Qaryūn water pump and behind the Ottoman Governmental Compound as-Sarayah. The house is named after Hāj Abd al-Karīm Sūfān.

The external part of the house is distinguished by being one whole architectural unit surrounding other adjacent buildings. It consists of three storeys. The ground floor contains the dīwān. Its rooms are overshadowed by a large hall with a roof made of red bricks. The ceilings are ornamented with colored gypsum. The middle of the house is a relatively small courtyard. Beside this, there is a steep stairway that leads to the upper storeys. Part of the house is used as a small hotel.
