The Can’anite city of Shakeem is situated in the eastern part of Nablus, known today as Balata Hill or Tal Balātah. Ruins of a temple and of the governor’s palace are still visible in what was once the middle of the Can’anite city. The temple was known as the Fortress Temple and it was a centre for worship of the god Baal. The remains of three walls surrounding the city may also still be seen. These walls were built during different periods; the remaining parts of these defensive walls reach nearly ten meters in height, but were originally much higher. There is one main gate at the eastern approach and another at the North West. The Ministry of Tourism established a small museum on the site. Visitors can also watch a documentary film about the Can’anite city lasting around 20 minutes.
