The Old Khān Market (Textiles Market)

This market was built by ruler Lala Mustafa Pasha in 1687 AD. The features of this market include a clear equality in the areas of the shops, as well as the shapes of their doors. They imply the desire for openness skyward and the exploitation of the natural light besides good ventilation. All these characteristics for ventilation were taken into consideration. The architectural design, in the conclusion, was achieved by the rectangular openings in the roof. There is also a large circular opening in the middle of the market. That was for allowing more natural sunlight to penetrate.

This market was the clothing emporium during the Ottoman era. It was well furnished with the bright silk productions of Damascus and Aleppo in Syria, cloaks of Baghdad, and calico and prints from Manchester, besides the textiles of the town itself.

The windows above market shops were for the rooms used as dormitories for students coming from all over the Islamic world so as to study in Nablus.
